Tarakanov Fortress

Unique fort situated near the Dubno town in Rovno district in village Tarakanov in 170 km from Lvov. It was built at the end of 19 century near the border with Austria-Hungary empire. The opening was attended by Emperor Alexander III. It's much bigger then Brest Fortress, but wasn't used for the purpose.

Fort is a rhombus with side length up to 240m, surrounded by ramparts around a height of about 14m, which strengthened by brick walls with width 3m.

Along the perimeter of buildings there are casemates, which were intended mainly for fighting. Also there was a hospital, operating, morgue, toilets, three wells, ammunition depots.

There are many underground passages, trap doors, the remnants of the former traps on the lower floors. It is not desirable for a walk without a guide, which in time will warn about dangerous places.

Now all of the underground entrances are concreted. No one knows how much they are long and what is there. Construction is abandoned. Officially Tarakanov fort belongs to the Ministry of Defense and is on the balance of the local military unit.

In January I've been sent to business trip to UK. I've got a lot of work but found 3 hours for visiting London. Probably as usual it was rainy :)
